North Korea marks second anniversary of Kim Jong-il's death

North Korea is marking the second anniversary of the death of leader Kim Jong-il, who ruled the country for almost two decades.

Kim Jong-il died on 17 December 2011 and images from Pyongyang on Tuesday showed thousands attending a large memorial to commemorate Mr Kim.

His third son and chosen successor Kim Jong-un inherited the leadership after his death.

Official television footage showed Kim Jong-Un sitting centre stage beneath a huge red mural of a flag emblazoned with a picture of his smiling father.
